Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson believes that Thursday’s Premier League clash between Stoke City and Manchester United at the Britannia Stadium will end in a draw.
“I very rarely go against Stoke at home, they had a great result the other day at Everton, played well against Chelsea and I do not think that Man Utd are as great as everyone says they are,” the 46-year-old wrote on Skysports.com.
“They have just been to Tottenham and drawn 0-0 and this is a harder ground to go to in my opinion, so I think it will be a draw and I am going to go 1-1.”
Merson’s prediction of the match does sound a bit strange, especially considering the fact that United are in brilliant form at the moment and have abundance of quality.
Although Louis van Gaal’s side failed to win against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday, one has to remember that it was only goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who stopped them from claiming the three points.
Stoke are strong at home and the Britannia is not an easy place for visiting teams, but United should still be considered as favourites to win.
The Potters have won their last two league matches and will fancy at least a draw, but they simply do not have the quality that United manager Van Gaal has at his disposal.
If Stoke score the first goal of the match, then they could give United a scare. But if the Red Devils take the lead, then one should expect them to wrap up the three points without too much of a problem.
