Paul Merson believes that Arsenal will start the New Year with a win.
The Gunners take on Southampton away from home in the Premier League on Thursday.
Arsenal will head into the clash at St. Mary’s Stadium on the back of two successive wins, and Merson backs the Gunners to pick up all three points.
“I think Arsenal will beat Southampton,” the former Arsenal attacker wrote on Skysports.com. “Saints did alright against Chelsea and got a good result but there was only ever going to be one winner in the second half, if there was going to be one.
“However, fair play to Southampton, they are out of their slump and have bounced back. If you lose five on the trot that is hard, and since then I think they have won two and drawn one, so job done there.
“But I just think that Arsenal are one of those teams that can get on a roll. That was a big, big result at West Ham and to go there - where it is going to be blood and thunder - and then to go to a place where it is ‘you play, we play’, well there are not many teams that are better than Arsenal when it is ‘you play, we play’. So I will go 2-1 to Arsenal.”
Merson’s prediction will be backed by many, as Arsenal are in good form and have better quality players than Southampton have.
Ronald Koeman’s side held league leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s on Sunday following wins against Crystal Palace and Everton.
Arsenal will certainly be aware of the threat that Southampton will pose and will be prepared for whatever the Saints have to throw at them.
It will not be easy for Arsenal to win at St. Mary’s and they could even lose if Southampton score first, but the North London outfit should be considered favourites heading into the match.
