Michael Owen has backed his former club Newcastle United to defeat Burnley in the Premier League today.
The Magpies will host the promoted outfit at St. James’ Park and will head into the clash on the back of a 3-2 home win against Everton.
“The Magpies are likely to be without both Papiss Cisse, through suspension, and Alan Pardew for the visit of the Clarets who have kept the same starting XI for their last five PL games and those 11 all played the full 90 minutes against City at the Etihad last time in their excellent 2-2 draw,” Owen wrote on Betvictor.com.
“The Clarets are covering on average more distance than any other side in the division and you wonder if and when fatigue will play its part in such a small squad.”
A footnote added: “Michael’s recommendation: Newcastle to win at 8/11”
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson is of a similar opinion and wrote on Skysports.com: “Burnley have got a great attitude. Fair play to them, I mean 2-0 down at Man City you are thinking this could be five, six or seven. And then all of a sudden they get a result!
“It catches up with you in the end though and Burnley just do not have the squad at the moment. The ones who are not playing are nowhere near as good as the ones who are playing, so it is hard to bring other players in and I can understand where Sean Dyche is coming from.
“However, they will not feel as tired as if they had got beaten 5-0 - they got a draw and they will be buzzing.
“As for Newcastle - who had a great result the other day against Everton - some teams have a bit of a lull when a manager leaves, but I think that the Geordie fans will be more than happy, as they have not really liked Alan Pardew from day one.
“So I am going to go for Newcastle to win this one 2-1.”
Newcastle are currently 10th in the Premier League table with 26 points from 19 matches, while Burnley are second from bottom with 16 points.
