Manchester United have drawn against Stoke City at a wind-swept Britannia Stadium today, but it could have been a whole heap worse.
United were, in the end, thankful to the thickness of the post and a favourable decision from referee Michael Oliver when Chris Smalling handled in the box.
But for most United fans, the game changed when Louis van Gaal decided to take Luke Shaw and Radamel Falcao from the field.
It was, on the one hand, an understandable decision. Shaw and Falcao are both still struggling for full match fitness - Shaw in particular was struggling for breath.
But the substitution of Falcao certainly seemed more of a shock. He was putting in a great shift up front and Marc Muniesa and Ryan Shawcross were struggling to handle his strength and intelligence, not to mention the fact he scored United's goal.
Against Tottenham Falcao received some almost unfair criticism for his performance, but he is a natural striker and certainly looked like the most likely United player to find the back of the net.
Taking him off seemed an odd decision from the Manchester United boss but it is clear he still feels the Colombian, who looked visibly shocked as he was asked to leave the field, is not quite ready to play a full 90 minutes of football.
Here is some of the fan Twitter reaction to Falcao's performance and LvG's decision to bring him off...
Surprised Falcao come off, shoulda been RVP or Mata for Herrera.— Full Time DEVILS (@FullTimeDEVILS) January 1, 2015
Falcao was excellent and should never have been subbed off— Jordan Hackett (@Devildart180) January 1, 2015
Don't know what Falcao has to do to be a permanent fixture in this team. Thought he was excellent today. Still gets the hook. #MUFC— Sean O Farrell (@sofarrsogud) January 1, 2015
I wouldn't have taken Falcao off, I thought he was having an excellent game— David Molloy (@iAmDavidMolloy) January 1, 2015
Taking Falcao off was stupid. His hold up play was superb and constantly looked to push forward @theredsunited— Jed (@jedF7) January 1, 2015
Falcao has been superb today so don't get why LVG has taken him off. Very odd.— Jamie Clarke (@JamieC0383) January 1, 2015
Lost momentum when falcao went off, should have been Rvp but hindsight is a wonderful thing, nice to see falcao playing well though— lyndenunited (@Lyndenunited) January 1, 2015
Still cant understand how Falcao was taken of and RVP stayed on the pitch! Falcao looked hungry and dangerous whereas RVP offered nothing— United View (@United20View) January 1, 2015
Falcao clearly felt he could play the 90, no reason for him to come off, he looked very dangerous and shocked when he was subbed— ILoveJanuzaj (@jackchapman1234) January 1, 2015
It was the wrong decision to take Falcao off!— S. Mex (@MexsonS96) January 1, 2015
