Gerrard is said to prefer a move to an MLS club and is expected to formally announce his decision today.
What a sad day for Liverpool Football Club and, as former defender Jamie Carragher thinks, what a sad day for English football as a whole.
Sad day for Lfc & English football with the Gerrard news, I think it's the right decision all things considered.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) January 1, 2015
Leaving or retiring is a great confidence booster, this morning my timeline was full of "whys Gerrard starting" now it's "Gerrard best ever"— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) January 1, 2015
Gerrard has been a loyal servant for Liverpool over a long, memorable career. His on-field influence appears to have waned in recent times, however, and many feel it is the right time for the 34-year-old to call time on a magnificent tenure at Anfield.
Despite his recent misfortune on the pitch, both Carragher and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker have paid tribute to the Reds skipper on Twitter.
Seems Steven Gerrard is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. One of the finest players to have graced the PL. A top, top player.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) January 1, 2015
It will be almost unfathomable to think of Liverpool without Gerrard - but that is a reality it seems the Anfield giants will have to come to terms with. All good things must come to an end, even if they aren't in the most ideal of circumstances.
