Arsene Wenger explains Lukas Podolski was injured for Southampton loss

Lukas Podolski Pre FA Cup Press Conference

The German international is believed to want a move away from Arsenal this winter.

Arsenal were short of strikers today with Olivier Giroud suspended and Danny Welbeck injured. It meant that Chuba Akpom was in the bench and Alexis Sanchez started the game through the middle, but Arsenal certainly missed a focal point up front.

Today would have been the perfect opportunity for Lukas Podolski to again attempt to force himself upon Arsene Wenger as a starting option, through the middle of the attack.

So far Poldi has been mostly utilised on the left-hand side for Arsenal, although in fact he has spent most of his time sitting on the bench.

That has seen him openly admit to being open to a move away from Arsenal in January, with Inter Milan already making an approach for his services.

Yesterday it was reported that the player had 'stormed' out of Arsenal training, citing a groin injury as the reason for his absence. It was seemingly a hopeful match from some over-exuberant media sources, after Podolski slammed Arsenal for rejecting an initial approach in his services from the Italian outfit.

He was not in the squad for the 2-0 defeat against Southampton today and Wenger has stated the reason why:

"He was not available today. He would have had a chance to start but he was injured."

But while that might put the argument to rest for some, the conspiracy theorists will perhaps not accept this perfectly reasonable explanation.
