It's a dilemma. Should Liverpool call time on Steven Gerrard ?
The veteran midfielder has been a talismanic presence in the Reds starting line-up for the past decade, but there are some Liverpool fans who think his days in the first team are numbered. And they point to Monday night's emphatic 4-1 Anfield win over Swansea, where Gerrard was an unused substitute, to back up their thoughts.
Gerrard's ageing legs, of course, mean that he is no longer able to drive the team forward as he once did so well, and his sluggish performances in the centre of the pitch this season have led many to call for him to be dropped.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has shown great faith in the 34-year-old during his time at Anfield, but after last night's big win, it looks difficult for the England international to break back into the Liverpool starting line-up.
With Jordan Henderson and Lucas stationed in the Liverpool central-midfield, Liverpool's current style of play demands a high-tempo, and Gerrard has struggled to fit into an exuberant and energetic team.
He remains idolized by many fans, but Liverpool's performance last night was confirmation that the side are stronger without him in the team, and some Reds supporters are hoping to see him left out more regularly.
Liverpool's next game comes against Leicester City on New Year's Day and the general consensus amongst fans posting on Twitter was that Rodgers should name an unchanged line-up.
I think it's obvious that Gerrard changes the dynamic when played in the team and has a massive negative effect on Hendo and his role. #LFC— If Emre Can, Can (@chizzckh) December 30, 2014
It's funny how we beat Swansea without Gerrard and now we have proven that he is not needed in the squad #LFC— Lamborini (@greg_ynwa) December 30, 2014
We're so much better without Gerrard in the starting XI. He'll always be my idol and favourite ever player but it's a fact. #LFC— Anfield Bond (@AnfieldBond) December 30, 2014
I do still think that Gerrard is targeted & disproportionately blamed by a vocal section of 'our' fan base. They know who they are. #LFC— Lezabella (@LFC5xEuroChamps) December 30, 2014
Would like an unchanged side against Leicester, of course Toure in for suspended Skrtel but obviously Gerrard will come back in. #LFC— AyJay (@AndrewJNicholls) December 30, 2014
Its time that Gerrard starts playing the same amount of time that Scholes, Lampard & Giggs ended up playing. max 30mins #LFC— Lee Thaver (@DoMeATaver) December 30, 2014
Rodgers has to avoid repeating previous mistakes by buying backup speedy striker, sell Lovren, keep Gerrard away from defensive midfield @LFC— Ignat Manjoo (@IgnatManjoo) December 30, 2014
Gerrard shouldn't start against Leicester. Leave him for the AFC Wimbledon FA Cup fixture when pace of game won't be an issue. #LFC— The Kop (@MinstrelMusings) December 30, 2014
New keeper, continue playing can, Manquillo and moreno. Let gerrard earn a place back in the side and we might just get top 4 #lfc— Darren jones (@DJJones81) December 29, 2014
