Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar has been speaking about the alleged interest from Manchester United last summer.
The Netherlands international was strongly tipped to move to Old Trafford after enjoying an outstanding World Cup campaign. But his countryman Louis van Gaal did not make a move and Vlaar has now admitted he heard nothing despite the regular rumours.
In an interview with Algemeen Dagblad, the Villa centre-back said, “Manchester United? I never heard anything. If a club I really wish had (been interested) I would have noticed that.”
Vlaar was seen as a viable option for United due to his considerable Premier League experience, his previous work with van Gaal and the fact that his current contract was coming to an end.
That deal now has just six short months to run and if he does not sign a new contract at Villa he will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with any and all interested parties.
United may still make their move, but with the likes of Mats Hummels and Sergio Ramos also linked it remains to be seen which new defenders will ultimately arrive at Old Trafford.
