Arsenal are interested in signing Kevin Mendez.

Arsenal are pushing to sign Uruguayan prospect Kevin Mendez, it is being reported.

The 18-year-old striker plays for Penarol in his homeland, and is regarded as one of the world's best prospects.

Italian website Tuttomercato report the Gunners are working hard to try and secure a transfer for the exciting talent, who has impressed at youth international level.

Manchester United have also been linked with his signature previously, but it is Liverpool who will kick themselves the most if Arsenal win the race for his signature.

The Mirror reported a year ago that then Liverpool striker Luis Suarez had given a 'glowing report' about his countryman's talent, recommending him to the club - yet he remains in South America.

Mendez could have been a parting gift from Suarez had they taken up the chance to sign him, and to miss out is one thing, but as Arsenal are discovering with Cesc Fabregas - to inadvertently allow him to sign for a rival, could be a decision they come to regret.
