Reports earlier in the month claimed Manchester United were interested in Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, but those claims have now gone further.
The Daily Star reports that United are willing to pay the Spanish international £105,000-a-week after tax if he moves to Old Trafford.
There is no doubt United are in need of quality centre-backs, and the fact that Ramos is also a wonderful option at full-back makes him a sensible target. But could they really sign him?
There is a very big issue that has to be considered in each and every report linking United – or any other club – with Ramos, and that is the talk of a possible new deal at the Bernabeu.
It is remarkable the number of times top clubs are linked with top players shortly before they pen new contracts with improved terms. But with a deal that runs until the summer of 2017, Ramos is not exactly approaching a make-or-break moment.
The latest report claims United manager Louis van Gaal has made Ramos his number one target, so add him to the list that already includes the likes of Kevin Strootman and Mats Hummels and wait and see.
