Tottenham's 2014/15 half-term report - Pochettino's plans starting to take shape?

After a season where they had spent in excess of £100 million on players and two men paid the price with their jobs, Mauricio Pochettino was given the task of making this Tottenham side a success.

Prediction at the start of the season

We were all expecting Tottenham to have the same kind of pressing style that Pochettino had at Southampton and they would perform solidly, with qualification for the Europa League expected to be where they would end up again in the league this season.

Performance so far

They have had their frustrations, including home losses to the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City but they are in the mix for the Champions League places, but one pleasing aspect about their game is the amount of late winning goals the side seems to be coming up with. It shows the side can play for 90 minutes, and seems to come on strong late on in the games. They have progressed to the semi-finals of the League Cup where they face Sheffield United, so they are favourites to reach a cup final in their first season under Pochettino, and have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Manager rating

7/10 - Pochettino was always going to need time to implement his ideas and tactics on the team, but with the side shaping up to have a good season, there is potential for an excellent first season at the helm. He has given players that probably weren't given enough of an opportunity last season some game time, and when it comes to transfers, he has only brought in a few players and not tried to overhaul the squad.

Best game Spurs have been involved in

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham. Though only the one goal in the game, it was full of drama as a ten-man Spurs side won in the last minute courtesy of a goal from debutant Eric Dier. It had red cards, missed penalties, plenty of chances, and a big high point for the visiting fans was getting one over one of their biggest rivals.

New signings (loan or otherwise)

After appointing Younes Kaboul as captain, Federico Fazio looks to have forced his way into the side and kept the Frenchman out of the back line. Ben Davies has provided great cover for Danny Rose and looks as though he could make the left-back slot his own, whilst Benjamin Stambouli and Eric Dier have put in solid performances when called upon. Michel Vorm was a very good signing in terms of back-up goalkeepers, in terms of experience and ability.

Most significant win of the season

Tottenham 2-1 Everton. A lot was said about Spurs and playing immediately after European games. They played against a side that was in the same position and won after coming from behind. It was a game that also got Roberto Soldado in among the goals, a positive for the struggling striker, and a win over a side that has similar ambitions to themselves.

Spurs low point so far

Tottenham 0-1 West Bromwich Albion - An example of those performances after Europa League games that have been lethargic and toothless. It raised a few eyebrows and showed some concerns, but as the games have passed, they seem to be fairing better in the games immediately after European competition. It will be interesting to see how they do when the Europa League returns in February.

Strengthening in January

With all the speculation surrounding the futures of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, Pochettino could be on the lookout for a striker more than anything else. Defender DeAndre Yedlin is due to join in the January window from Seatttle Sounders.

The rest of the season

As they adapt even more to Pochettino's ideas, one would expect their performance level to improve even further. It will be interesting to see how much of an impact the cup competitions will have on their season in the Premier League, and whether they can make a serious challenge for a place in the Champions League.
