Arsenal are reportedly considering a £20million move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho when the January transfer window opens.
The defensive midfielder was heavily linked with Manchester United, and had David Moyes remained in charge the 22-year-old would probably be at Old Trafford given the number of times he was scouted by the Scot.
But United’s interest has seemingly ended following Moyes’ departure and Arsenal are now believed to be the favourites for a player who would complete their midfield.
Many players are hailed as the missing link, but William is exactly what Arsenal need: a young, combative and supremely talented defensive-minded player who would add steel to the Gunners’ side and protect their defence while allowing the more creative players to do what they do best.
William deserves all the plaudits that have come his way and while this season has not seen him at his barnstorming best he still remains one of the few players who could ultimately give Nemanja Matic a run for his money in that position.
If Arsenal really can sign him for £20million it would be an outstanding piece of business from Arsene Wenger, and one that could add plenty of points to the club’s end-of-season tally, both in 2015 and for many years to come.
