One Arsenal player who will be pleased with Giroud's red card

Danny Welbeck has a chance to stake his claim for a central spot once again for Arsenal.

Olivier Giroud's red card for Arsenal has come at a poor time for the club with a crucial run of fixtures ahead.

His headbutt against QPR leaves him suspended for two Premier League games against West Ham and Southampton and the the FA Cup match with Hull.

The Gunners have a chance to climb above two of the teams above them in the table, but must make do without the Frenchman.

For one of his teammate however, his suspension provides a welcome opportunity.

Giroud's enforced absence gives Danny Welbeck the chance he will have wanted to prove himself through the centre.

The striker will have felt he did that earlier in the season, but ever since Giroud has returned from injury, he has found himself shunted out wide.

Welbeck has failed to score in five consecutive games, not since hitting the away winner against West Brom in late November.

While he is professional enough to play out wide as he did so frequently for Manchester United, it's obvious that in this position he struggles for goals.

He has even admitted the chance to play centrally for Arsenal was key in making the move to The Emirates, as he has done so successfully for England over the past year.

Giroud's lack of discipline could be detrimental to his own role, and if Welbeck can score in each one of the matches the Frenchman misses, Arsene Wenger could be left with little option but to reconsider his preference to play the former through the middle.
