McClaren linked as shock replacement for Martinez, does it make any sense?

Steve McClaren

The Derby boss has been linked with the Everton job.

According to the Daily Mail, Derby County boss Steve McClaren is being eyed as a shock successor to Everton coach Roberto Martinez.

As the report itself states, it comes as quite a revelation that Martinez is close to the sack - if the rumour is to be believed, of course.

And it is even more of a revelation that Derby County's manager is being lined up as the Spaniard's potential replacement.

Could it make any sense at all?

From every way of looking at it, the answer would be no.

McClaren appears to be building something very impressive and Derby, meaning both he and the club would benefit from him staying.

Martinez, meanwhile, may be underachieving at Everton right now but it wouldn't make sense for the Toffees to lose faith in him just yet.

Should results continue to let Everton down and reach a desperate stage, that would be a different debate. But the Spaniard enjoyed plenty of success last season and topped his Europa League group this term - which has no doubt affected his side's domestic campaign.

If there is any credence at all to the report, then, Derby and Everton would potentially both lose out with such short-term thinking.
