Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been singing the praises of Southampton boss Ronald Koeman.
Koeman was appointed the Saints manager in the summer following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Dutchman has done a truly brilliant job at Southampton, who are currently fourth in the Premier League table with 32 points from 18 matches.
Koeman, who has managed AZ and Feyenoord among other clubs in the past, worked with Mourinho at Barcelona when Louis van Gaal was in charge of the Catalan giants.
Mourinho is impressed with the Dutchman’s work at Southampton so far and is quoted as saying by Chelsea’s official website: “We worked together in Barcelona in Mr Van Gaal’s coaching staff so we were colleagues.
“So I know Ronald well, I know he is a good coach with a good mentality and I know the football principles he likes so when I saw him takeover Pochettino’s team, I thought he was the right guy to do it.”
Southampton have failed to win against Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United in recent weeks, but that cannot detract from the fact that the Saints have been one of the teams of the season so far.
What Koeman did in the summer was make shrewd signings who have all played key roles in the team’s success.
Southampton’s football has been enjoyable to watch with all the players doing their bit. One suspects that they will fall short of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season, but they are certainly going to take the fight down to the wire.
