Former Arsenal defender and current football pundit Martin Keown has named as many as five Chelsea players in his Team of the Season so far.
But who else makes the list?
The only Manchester United nominee is goalkeeper David de Gea following the Spaniard’s wonderful start to the season.
The Red Devils have bounced back from a tough start with seven wins in the last eight matches, but a number of those victories have come as a direct result of their number one’s heroics in the United net.
“Over the last two years he has been the only Manchester United player performing at the levels you would expect of that club,” Keown told the Daily Mail. “He has matured, gets more reliable with every game he plays and is now absolutely key to any success they have.”
Keown’s back four is arguably his most controversial area, though a centre-back paring of Gary Cahill and Vincent Kompany isn’t all too surprising.
His full-backs, however, may cause a bit of a stir as he opted to leave out the usual names and opted for Everton’s Leighton Baines and Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne, England’s current first-teamers.
The Chelsea influence have their say over midfield as Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Eden Hazard make the list but there is a space on the left for Arsenal’s big summer signing Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean ace has been superb for the Gunners, scoring nine league goals and assisting a further five in 15 starts, persuading Keown to give him the nod ahead of the likes of David Silva and Angel Di Maria.
“When he plays on the left, the picture is clearer for him — he cuts inside so well and his work-rate is infectious. With that he has great quality and has scored important goals,” Keown added.
The strike duo picks itself – Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and new Stamford Bridge idol Diego Costa have 27 goals between them this season and will both be in the hunt for the top scorer award come next May.
Keown’s XI: David de Gea, Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Vincent Kompany, Nathaniel Clyne, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero.
