Reports: Roma watching Benteke

Aston Villa could have their work cut out trying to hold on to Christian Benteke in January and reports suggest that Roma may also be lingering.

Christian Benteke is showing signs of returning to form at Aston Villa and his exploits have attracted the attentions of some possible suitors.

There have been reports that Liverpool and Tottenham are considering making a move for the Belgian international, but he may also be tempted by a switch to Italy.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Serie A side Roma have been watching Benteke for some time and are weighing up the possibility of tabling a bid in the new year.

Roma are doing well in the league this season and although they have exited the Champions League at the first stage they could still make this a successful campaign.

However, the Eternal City side are lacking firepower and have needed a proven goal-getter for some time, especially with ex-Arsenal forward Gervinho headed for the African Cup of Nations.

Roma may struggle to compete with the financial resources of Spurs or Liverpool, but it is possible that the two Premier League clubs may look elsewhere, leaving the Lupi able to pounce.

Aston Villa fans may well feel unsettled by the uncertainty surrounding Benteke's future because he has been a crucial figure for them and could be the difference between mid-table security and a relegation dogfight.
