In different circumstances, Brazilian players Paulinho and Leandro Damiao could have been turning out together for Tottenham Hotspur.
After all, former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas recently admitted Damiao was one of his top targets while at White Hart Lane, along with Oscar, Willian and Joao Moutinho.
But it seems Paulinho could be linking up with the 25-year-old striker after all, but not at White Hart Lane.
In quotes published by SambaFoot, Cruzeiro president Alexandre Mattos has admitted he is interested in bringing Paulinho to the club, while Damiao is reportedly closing in on a loan move of his own.
“Paulinho is a situation that can happen but only on loan,” Mattos is quoted as saying, in comments that echo those made by Corinthians’ director of football Edu earlier this year.
“We have asked several times and Tottenham are still unclear on whether they will lend.”
If they do, it appears Paulinho will link up with a player who was once deemed the answer to Spurs’ striking problems.
Since then, Damiao has struggled to replicate his previous form and has netted just six times in 26 appearances for current club Santos this season.
But with Mattos suggesting things are moving forward with the striker, if Tottenham allow Paulinho to leave he looks set to play with a one-time Tottenham target who has since been forgotten in favour of the likes of Jackson Martinez and Andrej Kramaric.
