If Tottenham Hotspur are serious about securing Champions League football next season then the January recruitment of a striker of Mauro Icardi’s quality could be key.
The Lilywhites have previously been linked with a £30 million-plus move for the Argentine, who has impressed both with Inter and previous Serie A club Sampdoria.
Signed back in the summer of 2013, the Nerazzurri star has scored 21 goals in 43 appearances for the Milan club to date and has attracted plenty in the way of Premier League interest with Chelsea and Liverpool both thought to be tracking the striker.
However Tottenham may have an ace up their sleeve if fresh reports are to be believed, with Inter rumoured to be preparing a bid for Lilywhites midfielder Paulinho, who has struggled to make much in the way of an impact at White Hart Lane this term.
Inter director Piero Fassone was previously quoted as saying: "It's possible to keep Icardi and Kovacic although there are other clubs have more appeal than us.
"If then a big club arrives that wants them, at some point it would be right to make them happy."
With Icardi keen on moving to the Premier League, a move to Tottenham, where he would play a pivotal first-team role, could well tempt rather than competing with Diego Costa for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge.
And with Spurs able to offer a cash-plus-player deal that includes potential target Paulinho, it could yet be advantage Tottenham in the battle to land the popular striker.
