With Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew bracing himself for another busy month of coming and going this January, here are five things to look out for.
There’s rarely a dull moment at St James’ Park these days, with a miserable start to the season soon making way for a wonderful winning run, followed by some up-and-down form that has seen the club beat Chelsea - but then lose to Sunderland at home.
And next month is certain to be just as eventful, with Newcastle already embroiled in a series of transfer sagas that could well reach their conclusion in January.
Here are five things Magpies fans should be looking out for:
Another striker is an essential
With the on-loan Facundo Ferreyra edging closer to the exit, Pardew has made no secret of his desire to recruit another striker this January, so prepare for four weeks of talk about Alexandre Lacazette, before someone like Aleksandr Mitrovic arrives.
Moussa Sissoko is hot property
Anyone who has watched the Frenchman in full flight will know that Sissoko is a player destined for big things, and Arsenal have already been linked with a £16 million move for the midfielder, who is likely to attract plenty in the way of interest this January.
Others could follow the Frenchman
Newcastle players like Steven Taylor and Davide Santon may have been sidelined for large parts of the season, but that hasn’t stopped them or stalwarts like Fabricio Coloccini being linked with a move away from the club – don’t be surprised to see others leave too.
The club will be linked to an unknown
With players like Nampalys Mendy of Nice already being tagged as the “new Cheick Tiote”, it seems almost inevitable that a under-the-radar signing will arrive from Ligue 1 or mainland Europe in January.
Watch this space on Rangers links
Much has been made of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s decision to buy shares in Glasgow Rangers, and with both the Gers and Newcastle heading into January with plenty to play for, a few deals could yet be done - Remi Street to Ibrox or Lewis Macleod to the Toon perhaps ?
