Why Newcastle could put their season at risk by selling Sissoko to Arsenal

Newcastle United should not even contemplate selling Moussa Sissoko in the January transfer window.

Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko is said to be of interest to Arsenal, but the Magpies should reject any advances in the January transfer window.

Sissoko has been in fantastic form since the start of the season and his power and drive is something Arsenal feel could enhance the quality of their starting line-up considerably.

The Gunners are reportedly prepared to spend £16 million on the French international, but Newcastle would be foolish to accept any offers - regardless of the price.

The Magpies are in a dangerous situation at the moment, with their run over the Christmas period likely to define whether their season is a success or not.

With the Premier League looking more open than ever, there are still hopes around St. James' Park that they will be able to close the four-point gap on the top six, but they will need all their key players available if they are to do so.

Newcastle's form this season has been patchy and they will have to ensure that they are more consistent if they want to meet expectations.

Too many of their players have allowed their standards to dip, but Sissoko has maintained his high level throughout the campaign and to sell him midway through the season would be a major negative.

The 25-year-old offers attributes that nobody else has in their squad has and obtaining a replacement for him would be basically impossible.

Newcastle have seen the damage that relinquishing a key star can do to the squad, having sold Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye in recent years, and the impact of Sissoko's departure would likely be similar.

The Magpies have frustrated their sizeable fan-base with their mediocrity for too long, but selling Sissoko to Arsenal would show a willingness to accept mid-table finishes. They must avoid any temptation to land a short-term windfall of cash and show some ambition in January.
