Juan Iturbe - The £17.4m signing Liverpool will be glad they missed out on

AS Roma Badge

Liverpool were strongly linked to Juan Iturbe over the summer - but he signed for Roma instead.

Liverpool's summer spending spree has not exactly paid off, but not all of their alternatives would have been much better either.

While Alexis Sanchez was a clear miss for them, another player strongly linked with a switch to Anfield was Juan Iturbe, but he is not faring especially well.

The Roma forward was touted for a move to Liverpool after his standout performances for Hellas Veronas last season, but signed for the Giallorossi instead for £17.4 million.

Since signing however, the Argentine has struggled to set Serie A alight in the same way as last season, or to justify his price tag.

Iturbe has been unable to command a place in the side, and made only five starts in a Roma shirt in Italy's top flight since his big move.

The way he has failed to make an impact is reminiscent of the same way Lazar Markovic has been a fringe player at Liverpool, and it's likely had the Reds splashed out on him too - they would have had another similar situation on their hands.

The 21-year-old is a talented player but one who has only one full season playing in Italy under his belt, having been unable to previously shine at Porto, sent out on a series of loans.

A move to Roma has a little of 'too much too soon' about it, even though the Italian side are perfectly prepared to wait for their investment to come good.

Liverpool are surely determined to hold the same patience with Lazar Markovic, but Iturbe's solitary goal so far this season suggests he was not the proven answer either for Liverpool, and buying both would have been a bad move.
