With Sadio Mane set to head off to Equatorial Guinea in January to play for Senegal at the African Cup of Nations, Southampton needed to bring in a like-for-like replacement.
Reports in recent days have speculated that manager Ronald Koeman would look to bring in his Dutch compatriot Eljero Elia from Werder Bremen.
The 27-year-old wide man was a former star with Hamburg, but has seen his career stall since his 2011 move to Juventus, but Koeman will be hoping that his move to the South Coast will kickstart his career again.
With Werder Bremen struggling at the wrong end of the Bundesliga table, they've allowed Elia to move to Southampton on loan for the rest of the season, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.
Pacey with a trick or two, Elia has talent but it has been all too infrequent in recent years, whilst attitude problems have held him back too.
Southampton fans took to Twitter to react to his arrival, and there was certainly a mixed response from fans upon hearing Elia would be arriving in January.
Some compared him to former Saints bad boy Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, whilst others were willing to put their faith in manager Koeman after his signings of Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle in the summer.
Here are some of the responses from Southampton fans on Twitter this evening...
Pleased with us signing Eljero Elia , could be a very good deal for us and something we are missing at the moment. #SaintsFC— Stuart Jones (@StuartJones7) December 23, 2014
I bet somewhere in North London Paul Mitchell has just drawn a line through Eljero Elia's name on his notepad.... #saintsfc— Ben Stanfield (@BenStanners) December 23, 2014

Elia. Decent at Hamburg, rubbish at Juventus, not even heard about him at Werder. Unsure what to expect, I trust Koeman though #saintsfc— Rob Ferguson (@wanderingrob) December 23, 2014
