Manchester United welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Boxing Day with Louis van Gaal’s side looking to ensure their draw with Aston Villa was a mere blip in their impressive run of form.
Six wins and a draw from their last seven matches means United are very much on the up but Newcastle will be smarting from their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland and will want to take that frustration out on United.
Boxing Day matches are anything-goes affairs and this one could have plenty of goals with both sides capable of filling their boots.
United injury concerns: Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera are all doubts but have a good chance of featuring. Marouane Fellaini is expected to recover from an illness.
United absences: Luke Shaw is out with an ankle injury, Daley Blind lacks match fitness following a knee injury and Jesse Lingard has only recently returned to first-team training.
Newcastle injury concerns: Mehdi Abeid has a good chance of featuring following his toe injury while Tim Krul could return following an ankle injury.
Newcastle absences: Rob Elliot is out until mid-January with a thigh injury. Ryan Taylor and Davide Santon are both out with knee injuries while Gabriel Obertan, Rolando Aarons and Siem de Jong are also out, as is the suspended Cheick Tiote.
Predicted starting line-ups:
Manchester United – De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Rojo, Young, Fellaini, Carrick, Di Maria, Mata, Rooney, Falcao
Newcastle United – Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Taylor, Dummett, Abeid, Colback, Gouffran, Sissoko, Ameobi, Perez
