2014 has been a year which Arsenal's Mesut Ozil will never forget. Although it may not have ended in ideal circumstances, there have been some memorable highlights along the way.

In this piece we take a look back at some of the stand-out moments of the attacking midfielder's year.

Ozil's year started well, with the German international in brilliant form over the opening month. With 10 assists to his name already for the 2013-14 season, the former Real Madrid man had already established himself as one of Arsenal's key players in his first season at the Emirates.

His missed penalty against Bayern Munich in the Champions League (pictured above) in February appeared to knock his confidence though, and he struggled to get back to his best for months after that.

It was to prove a costly miss, as Arsenal crashed out of the competition to Bayern last season. However, things would soon get better for the 26-year-old.

Ozil played a major role in the Gunners' FA Cup triumph, staying on the pitch until the second half of extra-time and helping Arsene Wenger's men lift the trophy.

That success clearly meant a lot to the whole squad, who celebrated in style, as it ended their nine-year wait for some silverware.

It would not be long before Ozil was lifting another trophy...

Ozil would spend the summer in Brazil helping his country to win the World Cup - an achievement which will surely go down as the greatest of his career.

The Arsenal man played a pivotal part in the Germany team, and was a virtual mainstay in the side, with his full talent being on display in a particularly notable 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-finals.

The Germans would go on to be crowned champions of the world after beating Argentina 1-0 and it was a success that the whole nation celebrated together.

After the World Cup, Ozil's attentions returned to club matters, but his season so far has been a disappointing one.

Arsenal have struggled to live up expectations so far and Ozil has been sidelined for much of the campaign with injury.

He has still managed to play nine times for Arsene Wenger's men to date, though, and will be determined to help them up the table when he returns to action in the new year.
