Louis van Gaal provides injury update ahead of Manchester United v Newcastle United

Angry Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal says that Chris Smalling could return for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that that Chris Smalling could feature against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

England international defender Smalling has been out since early December when he suffered an injury in the Premier League clash against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 25-year-old subsequently missed the matches against Liverpool and Aston Villa, but Van Gaal has suggested that the centre-back could return to action against Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the league on Friday.

However, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini have all been ruled out.

“I don't think so, I am sorry,” Van Gaal told MUTV when asked if any of United’s absentees might return to action against Newcastle. “Maybe Smalling. Fellaini is still not available.”

United are currently third in the Premier League table with 32 points from 17 matches, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.
