Are Manchester United about to sign the best centre-back in the world?
The Red Devils were linked strongly to Diego Godin earlier this month, who has a €37 million release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract.
Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague believes the Red Devils would get the world's very best in his position if they were able to clinch his signature.
He picked the Uruguayan out as his best La Liga player of 2014 in his year in review for SkySports.
He said: "Godin inspired Atletico to only concede 26 goals last season and they won the league of course. Don’t forget the six goals conceded last season in the Champions League en-route.
"He’s aggressive, brave, and for me at the moment the best centre back in the world."
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone made clear he did not want to lose such a key player earlier this month, while the 28-year-old is believed to be very happy in Spain.
Tempting him away will be a tall order for the Red Devils, but they may struggle to find a better options.
Mats Hummels is enduring a terrible season with Borussia Dortmund, and Ron Vlaar isn't in the same class as Godin despite his World Cup performances.
