Who needs Christian Benteke more - Liverpool or Tottenham?

With the Belgian powerhouse getting back to his best he will have caught the attention of both of his long-standing admirers.

Aston Villa have become a more dangerous side in the final third since the return from injury of Christian Benteke, with the Belgian striker starting to get back to the scintillating form he showed in his debut season in England.

The striker proved a real handful for Manchester United’s rearguard on Saturday at Villa Park and rounded off an excellent individual display with a sublimely taken goal.

With Benteke starting to look like one of the Premier League’s top centre forwards once more, it is only natural that the transfer rumours of a switch elsewhere begin again too.

This January both Liverpool and Tottenham could well look to add to their options in the final third - but who needs him more?

Filling the gap left by Luis Suarez was never going to be an easy task for the Merseyside outfit, with the strikers left at Brendan Rodgers’ disposal struggling to get the goals to fire the club into top four contention.

Although key man Daniel Sturridge has been sidelined with injury, Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have struggled since summer transfers.

Despite being a completely different type of player to Suarez, Benteke would give Liverpool some much needed thrust in the final third, a physical presence and the ability to stretch opposition defences with his threat in behind.

With the Reds in need of goals, Benteke would be an ideal January acquisition if they can convince Villa to sell.

Like Liverpool, Tottenham are not scoring enough goals and have strikers such as Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor who are out of form and lacking confidence.

Spurs’ attacking play can be at times predictable due to overplaying in midfield and the lack of intelligent off the ball running from those furthest up the pitch - something that the Belgian would quickly remedy.

However, unlike Liverpool, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have a centre forward who is finding the back of the net with regularity in the form of Harry Kane.

That said, there is no reason that the versatile Spurs youth graduate could not play alongside or behind Benteke if the Villa man’s signature was captured.

Despite Kane’s rise to prominence this season, Spurs still have question marks over their striking options and bringing Benteke to White Hart Lane would offer a different threat to the options at Pochettino’s current disposal.

Liverpool are in need of striking reinforcements badly and have been over-reliant on Raheem Sterling to provide a threat in the final third.

As such, in the current situation, the Anfield outfit look in real need of a quality number nine; even more than Tottenham.
