Neville rips into Arsenal star Flamini, but his own brother disagrees

Mathieu Flamini clears

Gary Neville ripped into Arsenal's Mathieu Flamini, but his own brother Phil Neville was more forgiving of his display against Liverpool.

Liverpool and Arsenal played out an entertaining game at Anfield on Sunday, but one which was lacking in top quality.

Neither side defended particularly well, and Arsenal created fewer chances than they have in any game so far this season.

SkySports pundit Gary Neville was particularly cutting regarding the performance of one Arsenal star, defensive midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

He said: "Flamini throughout the game was a commentator, pointing and shouting at everybody.

"He looks to do every other person's job for them but the one job he's there to do, stopping the ball getting played into midfield, he failed to do regularly. I don't think he's got the quality to look after everybody else's job and look after his own as well.

"Flamini neither screens nor presses. Top midfield players screen well and press well. No one appears to be listening to Flamini. I don't see anybody reacting to what he's saying."

Flamini did not win a single tackle during the match, with Liverpool dominating possession, despite substitute Francis Coquelin managing to do so during the eight minutes he was on the pitch.

Phil Neville however disagreed regarding Flamini, pinning the blame for his display on Arsene Wenger's tactics leaving him stranded in the middle of the pitch.

He told The BBC: "Flamini was left with an impossible job. I would compare it to being like a windscreen wiper - you look left, then right, and try to get across to wherever Liverpool have played the ball, which is usually the opposite side to where you are heading.

"You have such a big area to cover that, regardless of the effort you put in, you cannot get near to people in time to break down play because you arrive too late to make the tackle."
