Liverpool latest: 'Next Buffon' strongly linked as Mignolet replacement

Skrtel reflects on Arsenal draw

On Sunday, Liverpool scored a 96th minute equaliser to earn a point against Arsenal, with Martin Skrtel powering home a superb header in the dying seconds - redeeming himself having been at fault for Mathieu Debuchy's goal for Arsenal in the first half. It was a positive display for Liverpool, and Skrtel said that the Reds got what they deserved.

"It is good that we scored the goal and got a point - we showed our spirit, desire and fight until the end," said Skrtel "In the first half, we were totally dominant and scored a goal. But straight after we conceded, just before half-time. There were a few mistakes there."

"Then we were behind a goal and trying to get an equaliser. I'm just glad we got it. Performance-wise, it was good. In the last three games - Manchester United, Bournemouth and this - I think we did well," added the Slovakian.

Rodgers slammed over Mignolet treatment

The game saw Brad Jones start in goal again, with Simon Mignolet on the bench. The Belgian's poor displays have resulted in his demotion, and legendary goalkeeping coach Bob Wilson has criticised Reds manager Brendan Rodgers for his decision.

"I’m really surprised Simon Mignolet has been dropped," Wilson told talkSPORT. "He is a solid, proven goalkeeper and the one thing you need as a goalkeeper is to know your manager and coaches believe in you."

"He’s taken the blame for what has been a very poor [Liverpool] team. That is the thing with being a goalkeeper, you walk a tightrope every game, and if your team is playing badly and letting in bad goals, you will inevitably let in a bad one yourself. And for him [Rodgers] to say he’s been dropped indefinitely is like a dagger to the heart," he added.

'Next Buffon' linked in £10m swoop

With Mignolet benched, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Liverpool will sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

So far, the likes of Petr Cech, Norberto Neto and Guillermo Ochoa have all been linked, and now it's Genoa's Mattia Perin being touted as a possible signing for the Reds.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Genoa want £10m for Perin, and the 22-year-old shot stopper is a top target for Liverpool after impressing in Serie A.
