The Finn lasted just four months of the Championship campaign before handing in his resignation, with Brighton sitting 22nd in the table, six points off bottom and four points from safety.
It looked as though it was simply never going to last for the former Liverpool man, as results went against him from the off - the Seagulls have won just three of 22 league matches. A lack of investment and a series of injuries may have cost Hyypia, although no manager will survive that kind of results, regardless of the circumstances.
The calls will now start for Liverpool to hire the Finn as their defensive coach - a move that could be absolutely perfect for both parties. As for Brighton, however, fans have given a decidedly mixed reaction to the news of Hyypia's resignation on Twitter.
The majority of supporters agree the 41-year-old's exit is for the best but most are full of regret that it didn't work out and have thanked the 'nice guy' Hyypia for all of his efforts. Others, though, feel as though Christmas has come early - and can't quite hide their delight that the former Liverpool defender has left the club.
Here is a sample of some of the best reactions... Goodbye Mr Hyypia:
Important to look at the bigger picture. Hyypia was not helped by injuries to key players and a poor summer transfer window. #BHAFC— Brighton Fanbase (@BrightonFanbase) December 22, 2014
Hyypia situation like that of Alistair Cook. Both nice guys, want them to be successful, but it just wasn't working. #bhafc (1/2)— RunMattRun (@runner_teacher) December 22, 2014
Best wishes to Hyypia but his managerial days in English Football were far less glamorous than his playing days #bhafc. Tony Pulis Please— Will Hammond (@Wammond) December 22, 2014
