Jak Alnwick has been handed an unexpected opportunity to impress at Newcastle United this season.
Unfortunate injuries to Tim Krul and Rob Elliot have handed the 21-year-old his Premier League break.
He is expected to line-up for the Magpies again on Sunday as they take in a Tyne-Wear derby clash with arch-rivals Sunderland.
Were he to impress on the biggest of occasions for Newcastle, he would have every right to expect that fresh terms will be tabled.
Alnwick’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season and Alan Pardew has been impressed by the youngster’s ambition, with discussions held some weeks back regarding his future.
Pardew said in the Daily Mirror: “You had to admire him really.
“He wasn’t really in a position to bang the door down - we’d just won four games in a row and it was before Tim Krul’s injury. But Jak’s contract is up in the summer.”
Is Alnwick fighting a losing battle, though, regardless of how well he performs under the top-flight spotlight?
He is due to arrive at St James’ Park next summer and the Magpies may feel that three senior shot-stoppers are enough, with Alnwick left as the odd man out.
