Michael Carrick has recently been made the club's new vice-captain and he started his first match following that appointment in the heart of a three-man defence against Aston Villa.
However after United had gone 1-0 down courtesy of a Christian Benteke goal, Louis van Gaal swiftly changed things around, putting Carrick back in his more familiar central midfield position and replacing him in defence with youngster Tyler Blackett.
With United's new vice-captain pulling the strings from the centre, the side looked considerably better and Radamel Falcao soon equalised.
There was to be no winning goal, for either side, but Carrick impressed throughout and suggested his time in defence must be limited so he can influence the game further forward in the weeks and months ahead.
The United midfielder had a passing accuracy of 93 per cent, he touched the ball 94 times and he played 24 forward passes. He also played two key passes, won two interceptions and made two effective clearances.
