Newcastle 'keeper Freddie Woodman reveals frustration at failed crossbar challenge

Previously tipped to make his Newcastle United debut this weekend, Freddie Woodman has flopped at the crossbar challenge

For a time it looked as though 17-year-old Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman would be turning out for the Magpies in a huge derby against Sunderland this weekend.

With Jak Alnwick struggling for fitness another young stopper was tipped to be thrown in at the deep end, but ultimately Newcastle's fears were unfounded, with Alnwick passed fit for Sunday's game.

Had Woodman been needed he may have spent today focusing on the task in hand, but instead he reflected on another appearance on television that did not quite go according to plan.

Luckily for the Newcastle youngster it was only Soccer AM's crossbar challenge, in which Woodman not only failed to hit the target but saw his effort go nowhere near the goal.

"I wanted to hit the crossbar so so so bad," the Newcastle player tweeted on Saturday morning.  "Gutted with my effort."

But while he aimed to return and succeed one day, he will also be keeping a very close eye on Alnwick's progress against the Black Cats, with a potential Newcastle debut still only an injury blow or suspension away.
