Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino speaks highly of star attacker Erik Lamela.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has spoken of the reasons behind the resurgence of Erik Lamela this season.

The 22-year-old Argentina international winger has not been in exactly great form so far this campaign, but he has certainly played much better than he did last term.

On Saturday, the £30 million signing from AS Roma in the summer of 2013 scored his first Premier League goal (click here to read more).

It was a great strike, too, as Lamela found the target from outside the Burnley penalty box in the 35th minute of the Premier League clash at White Hart Lane.

Lamela’s goal proved to be the winner, and Pochettino has now explained why his Argentine compatriot is playing better than he did in his debut campaign in the Premier League.

“We need to understand Erik is still young, he has a big talent but it was difficult his first season in England,” The Independent quotes him as saying after the match on Saturday. “This season he is fit - in the beginning it wasn't easy for him to play but he just needed time.

"Today was great for him because he needs to build his confidence, to be more strong and when we saw his performance today he is happy because it is another step in the right direction.”

"Last season was very difficult for him - his injury, he didn't play so much and getting used to a different culture and language,” added Pochettino.

"You need time to adapt to a new club and culture. He is very, very strong and he needs to keep going. We are very happy."

Lamela is far from his best at the moment and has still some way to go before he can recover the form he showed at Roma, but he is certainly on the right path.

Having had a proper pre-season and not struggling with injuries, the former River Plate youngster has been able to focus on his football better this season.

The Argentine still needs to be more consistent and be more involved in matches, and the Tottenham fans will hope that he cultivates those qualities as the season progresses.
