Players capable of operating in a number of different positions are a priceless commodity to any Premier League side.
Injuries and suspensions will inevitably strike over the course of a gruelling campaign, forcing managers into selection shuffles and tactical tinkering.
Their job is made considerably easier if certain members of their squad can be switched from one area to another with the minimum of fuss and maintain the standards required to compete at the highest level.
Paul Dmmett is among those to offer such versatility at Newcastle United.
The 23-year-old defender, a product of the Magpies’ academy system, is equally adept at left-back as he is at the heart of the back four.
He has been used by Alan Pardew on the flanks and in the middle this season and claims he is happy to slip in wherever his manager sees fit, with there no desire on his part to commit to a set post.
Speaking at an EA Sports FIFA 15 event, Dummett told HITC Sport: “I’ve played regularly this season so for me now it’s just about staying there and trying to establish myself as a player. Hopefully there is much more to come. I have to stay on top of my game because I want to stay in the team and play well. I just want things to carry on like they have been for the last few weeks and hopefully carry on for the rest of the season.
“A few people have spoken about me being a centre-back but at the moment I’m just enjoying playing. I haven’t really thought too much about it. I’ve played a lot of games this season at left-back, but as long as I’m playing in the team then I’m happy.”
Dummett may be required to provide cover at full-back for a few more weeks, with Davide Santon not yet ready for a return to competitive action.
He is edging closer to full fitness, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee complaint, but is unlikely to be risked before the turn of the year.
Once he is back in contention, Pardew will be presented with a welcome headache, with the likes of Daryl Janmaat, Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Massadio Haidara also pushing hard for limited starting berths in the back four.
