Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabiel Bentaleb has described the problem facing every member of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Bentaleb is turning himself into one of the Argentine’s most important players but he’s wary of a dip in form and potentially losing his place because of how difficult it is to get it back again.
“I have found my position at Tottenham but you are never safe – that’s football,” said the Algerian.
“You can get injured. I got injured and I came back into the team and you have to fight again.”
“Maybe next week I won't be in the team and I have to fight again. This is football, you always have to fight and even the biggest players you can see them on the bench sometimes.”
Pochettino is a manager who has always maintained that he will give players chances if they work hard and prove themselves every day he works with them in training.
He’s fair and that’s why players such as Bentaleb are rewarded for consistency and effort over long periods of time, when Tottenham have higher profile options in central midfield.
Pochettino is also a boss who won’t settle for too many below par performances when he has plenty of different options in a particular position.
Bentaleb’s comments can only mean good things for Tottenham because if the other midfielders have the same fight and determination, it’s only going to increase the competition levels at the club.
Tottenham face a difficult festive period with matches against Manchester United and Chelsea, where Pochettino could make changes regularly so it’s important for every member to make his selection dilemma as difficult as possible.
