The England under-19 international has been an impressive fixture of the youth set-up at Southampton.
Southampton's success appeared to have come at a price this summer.
Tottenham have poached their manager Mauricio Pochettino, Liverpool snapped up star striker Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana are being targeted by the biggest names in the game.
Not to mention Luke Shaw.
The flying left-back made a move to Old Trafford this summer in a reported £30 million deal.
Southampton immediately looked to replace him with a loan deal for Chelsea star Ryan Bertrand, but they also have an excellent option in the form of Matt Targett.
The 19-year-old left-back is certainly a talent and in January of 2013 it was reported the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were tracking his progress - with good reason.
Now a regular in the England under-19 side at left-back he has also featured at times in the Capital One Cup this season.
Now Southampton have moved to let him no he is a part of the first-team picture going forward, with a five-year contract extension.
He has signed a deal until 2019 and is now looking forward to a hopefully prosperous career with The Saints.
Now he has celebrated his new deal with a post on Twitter...
Delighted to sign a new contract with Southampton!! Thanks for all the messages— Matt targett (@Mattytargett) December 19, 2014
