Paul Merson predicts Arsenal v Liverpool

Former Gunner can't see a repeat of last season's heavy Liverpool win over Arsenal.

The way Liverpool blew Arsenal away at Arsenal must have astounded even themselves.

The two teams went into the game splitting pundits down the middle, at that stage unclear which of them would kick on and make the strongest push to win the Premier League.

It proved clearly to be Liverpool. The Reds raced into a 4-0 lead, finishing as 5-1 winners after easing off their early dominance.

Arsenal were shellshocked and it set the tone for the directions the two teams took in the league, Liverpool coming close to winning the title and Arsenal worrying about a late push for fourth from Everton until the final fortnight.

Former Gunner Paul Merson believes there will be no such repeat, making his pre-game prediction, tipping a 2-2 draw.

He told SkySports: "After a difficult few weeks Liverpool had a good win at Bournemouth and showed glimpses of their former selves. But to be honest if you had to pick a game for them to play then that would have been it, I don’t think there was more than two tackles in the whole game.

"They’re not the team they were and Arsenal have Sanchez so both teams won’t be able to cope with each other defensively. I’m going for a thrilling Desmond with lots of action on the cards."

Merson's assertion Liverpool 'aren't what they were' is highlighted in their ability, or lack of, to score so many goals this season.

SeasonGoals per game GAMEGoals Conceded per game
Liverpool 2013-2014 2.66 1.32
Liverpool 2014-2015 1.19 1.38

The Reds average twice as many goals per game on average last season, which considering all the problems Arsenal have in defence this time around, it's a relief they aren't as potent.

Earlier in the year the Gunners had their first choice centre-back pairing in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker but the Frenchman is poised to miss out, the question is whether Liverpool have the ability to take advantage.
