How Fonte's angry reaction to League Cup exit will benefit Southampton

Jose Fonte has reacted angrily to the League Cup defeat against Sheffield United earlier this week.

Southampton defender Jose Fonte has reacted furiously to losing against Sheffield United in the League Cup earlier this week.

The Saints have been on a poor run of form, which has seen them fail to win a match since the start of November as they head into their busiest period of the season.

Fonte was left apologising to fans and suggested that they didn’t see the real Southampton, with the Portuguese defender expecting improvements looking forward.

“It was not acceptable. I would firstly like to apologise to the fans, they didn’t deserve this. That is not us,” he’s quoted by the Herald.

“I am disappointed obviously and I am angry because we had a great opportunity to go and do something special and we just blew it.”

“Everyone needs to take responsibility, not hide in their shell. We must stand up and be counted because there’s another game in the Premier League and we need to stop this bad run.”

The frustration which is evident in Fonte’s comments represents a common feeling which will exist at the club and which can help produce some positive results over the festive period.

Southampton face games against Everton and Crystal Palace in their next two games, with the Toffees match at home, which represents a chance for the side to build some momentum ahead of games against Chelsea and Arsenal on January 1.

The side hasn’t been helped by injuries, with Ronald Koeman facing a midfield crisis ahead of the Everton game this weekend, which could see Toby Alderweireld moved forward into a holding midfield role.

The defeat would have created a determination for the side to react straight away regardless of injuries and suspensions, which makes mistakes less likely as the levels of concentration within the side will be that little bit more intense.

Fonte is right to have reacted so angrily and the fans deserve to see their side returning to the sort of form and performances they produced at the start of the season.
