Paul Merson predicts shock Manchester United result v Villa

Aston Villa 2

Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to drop points against Aston Villa.

Manchester United are hoping to earn a seventh successive win this weekend when they face Aston Villa.

The Red Devils are up to third in the Premier League table, with Villa sitting in 13th.

United are away from home where their form has been mixed this season prior to their recent run, and former Arsenal star Paul Merson foresees a surprise result, expecting Luis van Gaal's side to drop points.

He told SkySports: "Man Utd are rolling but I think this will be a hard game for them. Despite their five consecutive wins they haven’t come up against anyone like Benteke during that run and I think he’ll cause their defence – which isn’t great – problems.

"I think there will be a lot of space over the top for Agbonlahor, Benteke and others. I don’t think United are great, to be honest.

"United’s win against Liverpool was a good result. They weren’t great but they keep on winning so you’re better off being lucky than unlucky. Despite that I think this will be a draw."

Christian Benteke will certainly be a test for United's backline, although the 24-year-old has scored only once in six starts since returning from injury this season.

United will bank on their in-form forwards Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie will have enough to defeat Villa, as they showed in away against Southampton and Arsenal. And then there's Falcao on the bench...
