Former Arsenal star Martin Keown speaks highly of Everton youngster Ross Barkley.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has been singing the praises of Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

England international Barkley has been in brilliant form in recent weeks following a breakthrough season in 2013-14.

The 21-year-old is largely an attacking midfielder, but against Queens Park Rangers at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Monday, he played in a holding role and still impressed.

Keown believes that Barkley is destined for greatness and told The Daily Mail: “In 2011 I said he could be one of the best players to play for our country. He’s still got a long way to go but he’s such a powerful player.

“He is an outstanding talent but he needs to be more consistent. He played deeper the other day which was significant, he seems to be able to do both roles in midfield very well.

“His goal was stunning and I watched the game purely to watch how he would do. I wanted to see if Lukaku could pick up his form but Barkley was the main attraction. I was left disappointed by Lukaku but Barkley was impressive.”

Perhaps the fact that Barkley plays for Everton does not always get him recognised, but there is little doubt that he is one of the best and most promising youngsters in Europe.

A hugely talented player, the 21-year-old has the potential to become a ‘complete’ midfielder. Blessed with creativity, pace, strength and vision, Barkley could go on to establish himself as one of the best all-around midfielders in the Premier League.

Keown’s suggestion that Barkley should be more consistent is something that he needs to take on board. At 21, he has time on his hand and is certainly going to improve in the coming years.
