Two robot arms for double-amputee is straight out of Deus Ex

JHU Applied Physics Laboratory Leslie Baugh robot arms

A double-amputee has been testing two new limbs controlled by his thoughts.

Leslie Baugh is a double-amputee, and has been for 40 years, since a "freak" electrical accident. However, some new prosthetic limbs from the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory are giving him the opportunity to do things he hasn't been able to do for years.

Before the limbs were fitted onto Les he was hooked up to a computer to test out the connections using a virtual reality system. Les practiced controlling the digital limbs on screen whilst the real ones were being completed.

By using his thoughts to move the limbs Les has to operate each section one at a time before "resting". Take a look at the short video below which showcases what the team at the University and Les have accomplished - it's like something straight out of Deus Ex!
