Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is in a confident mood ahead of the Premier League derby against Newcastle United this weekend.
Sunderland head into the game as slight underdogs but Fletcher has warned Newcastle ahead of the game, that the Black Cats have improved in recent weeks and believe they can get three points.
“There's a lot of confidence around the team at the moment, despite the draws. We're keeping the door shut at the back, which is great for the defenders. We know if we can get a few goals, then we'll pick up a win,” he’s quoted by the Herald.
Sunderland’s defence has let them down on occasions this season, but each time they have suffered a setback, they have reacted with a dogged and determined performance, which has gradually allowed them to improve their form.
Sunderland will spend a lot of the game this weekend on the back foot and Fletcher is going to be a key player up front whether he’s trying to score on the counter attack or if he’s trying to bring others into the game.
He has the extra added motivation to get three points from the game, having missed previous derby games.
“I've missed both 3-0s when we've been there, so I'm looking forward to it. I wasn't even at St James' for both of them. I was stuck watching television with a moon boot on.”
“But we've got confidence that we can go there and win it again. We've done it before, so why can't we do it again?”
Sunderland will be well supported as they always are for games at Newcastle and can close the gap on Newcastle to four points with a victory.
