Report: Arsenal making steps towards Virgil van Dijk

Arsenal's first port of call in the January transfer window could be Celtic for Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Arsenal badly need defensive reinforcement in the transfer window and there are reports that Virgil van Dijk has been selected to be that man.

The Gunners have struggled since selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona and have looked vulnerable at the back and unable to close out games.

Laurent Koscielny has suffered with injuries and Per Mertesacker hasn't been on top form.

The rumour mill is gathering momentum as the January transfer window looms and there are reports in several newspapers suggesting that Arsenal have set their sights on van Dijk and are readying their offer.

The Daily Star believes that Celtic boss Ronny Deila would be reluctant to let van Dijk leave as he has become a key man for the Scottish outfit, but he may have little choice.

It is not clear what the asking price for van Dijk would be, possibly because Celtic don't want to let him leave at all, but the Bhoys are in a weak financial position to resist.

Arsenal have been linked to West Ham’s Winston Reid, whose contract expires in the summer, but they may be wary of competition for his signature. If Arsene Wenger can galvanise his defence for the short-term he may even wait until the summer and try and scoop up Reid for free.
