Newcastle's crucial derby injury boost as Sissoko will be fit

St James Park

Newcastle United fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the knock that Moussa Sissoko picked up last night isn't thought to be serious.

Newcastle may have had a night to forget against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, but they won't be adding injury to insult.

Alan Pardew's men were thrashed 4-0 in a League Cup quarter-final with a performance reminiscent of the bleaker days earlier in the campaign.

But Newcastle may have been distracted by Sunday's crucial derby against Sunderland looming on the horizon - a game that fans will be much more desperate to win.

So when midfielder Sissoko went down during the second half and needed lengthy treatment, there were fears that a key man may be absent for the weekend's crunch encounter.

However, according to the Chronicle, Sissoko will shake off his injury and will be fit for selection against Sunderland.

The Toon are however facing a goalkeeping crisis after Jak Alnwick suffered a shoulder injury while Tim Krul and Rob Elliot are already sidelined.

Newcastle are expected to ask the Premier League for permission to bring in a new 'keeper outside the transfer window because of the extent of their injury woes.
