Adam Armstrong admits that he did not expect to be in the Newcastle United first team at this stage in his career.

Newcastle United forward Adam Armstrong has admitted that he is surprised that he is in the club’s first team.

Armstrong is only 17 years of age, but he has already made two appearances in the Premier League this season to add to four matches he played for the Magpies in the English top flight in 2013-14.

The teenager also featured in Newcastle’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday.

Rated highly and claimed by many to have a bright future, Armstong admits that he was not expecting to be thrust into the limelight so soon.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has spoken highly of the teenager, who told ChronicleLive: “It’s massive to hear the manager talk me up.

“For a young player, and I am only 17, to get praise from the manager is amazing. I just want to show him what I can do when I get on. I am further ahead than I thought I would be.

“I thought at this stage, and this was my belief a few years ago, that I would be pushing for the reserves about now. To break through into the first-team squad is excellent for me, and I now have to keep going.”

Currently playing for the England Under-18 side, Armstrong has done well for himself and has impressed whenever he has been called into action.

The youngster seems to be level-headed and knows that he needs to work hard to develop himself. Armstrong certainly has the talent to succeed for Newcastle in the coming years.
