The England international is enjoying working under the Dutchman and it shows on the pitch.
Manchester United may not be playing the prettiest football in the world at the moment, even their manager is not impressed, but they are certainly getting the results. They have now won six games on the trot and victory over Aston Villa, a team they always seem to beat, and United will make it seven.
Since his return from injury this run began and the control he brings the side has been superb. Even in an unfamiliar central defensive slot he has excelled and the United fans are loving every single minute of it.
But for Carrick he is all about sharing the praise. And he has spoken to Manchester United magazine Inside United about his boss Van Gaal.
Carrick said: "He is pretty much the full package. He is reserved but determined at the same time. He is quiet, he is pleasant and he is polite. He is not somebody who shouts and screams in the changing room but I certainly wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him.
"He is stubborn and determined. He has got a real desire to win, like everyone at this club."
United fans will hope his and Van Gaal's excellent run of form continues this weekend.
