Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has picked his perfect five-a-side team, and there are two major surprises.
“That’s a good question because you have to make a decision if you want to go with attackers or have a combination and you might need a goalkeeper!” the Netherlands international told United’s official website when asked the question.
“I will go for David [De Gea] in goal. I need one defender so I will go with Michael Carrick because he can play in both positions [defence and midfield], then I’ll go for strikers so Wayne [Rooney].
“I’m involved as well? I’m not on the bench?! So me, David, Michael, Wayne and… this is very hard because you have Juan [Mata], you have [Angel] Di Maria and you have Falcao... I’ll go for Falcao.”
So the 31-year-old’s five-a-side team is: David de Gea, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao
There are two big surprises.
1) Inclusion of Michael Carrick
Van Persie includes the 33-year-old England international in his team because of his ability to play both in midfield and in defence.
However, Carrick has only just been playing (regularly) as a centre-back, but it seems that former Arsenal captain Van Persie still rates him higher than the recognised defenders in the United squad.
2) Exclusion of Angel di Maria
Van Persie chooses Radamel Falcao over Angel di Maria. This could surprise many football followers, especially as the Colombia international striker has not been in great form recently and has also struggled with injuries.
