Mama Shelter, Paris: hotel review

Mama Shelter Paris

If you are looking for something a little different during your stay in Paris then this is the hotel for you.

Mama Shelter Paris Reception

Mama Shelter is situated on the eastern edge of Paris, in the St.-Blaise neighbourhood, just a short 20 minute bus ride or a 15 minute Metro hop away from the centre of Paris, a cab in to town will set you back around €25.

The once multi-story car park was cleverly transformed into one of the worlds most intriguing budget friendly hotels by designer Philippe Starck. Known for his sleek industrial style Starck has created a concrete clad whimsical wonderland, with unexpected visual treats around every corner, you could easily find yourself spending more time in this hotel than first intended.

Mama Shelter Paris Pizzeria

This is where the young trendy Parisian professionals gather to eat, drink, and make merry. If you were hoping for a quiet drink in the bar before bed then you have come to the wrong place.

We stayed in a MAMA LUXE room (advertised as 17 - 21 m²) ours was closer to the 17m² mark, and without a real wardrobe of any kind or anywhere to store our two large suitcases the space was a little cramped. With bare concrete walls , a black ceiling and a charcoal carpet the room is very dark and moody.  In place of the Television, was a wall mounted 24-inch iMac, controlled by a remote and a wireless keyboard, offering free movies, TV and for the exhibitionists amongst you Photo Booth fun! The roomy double bed was very comfortable, with plush white linen and plump feather pillows. Either side of the bed was a fluorescent lamp covered by a face mask doubling as lamp a shade, we had Scooby-Do and Bat Man! The bright white bathroom was a good size and well stocked with Mama's own organic skincare range, available to purchase from the hotel store at reception. Extra features included free wifi, a microwave oven and mini bar.

Food & Drinks

The hotels restaurant, bar and pizzeria seem to be the most popular eateries in town with a constant buzz of locals and guests be sure to book yourself a table as you will almost certainly be disappointed if you don't. An excellent buffet breakfast is served from 7am - 11am for a very reasonable €16 per person.

Best Bits

Quirky interiors
Excellent Breakfast
Great cocktails
Interesting location (was great to see another side of Paris)
DJ's and live music in the bar

Worst Bits

Very dark bedrooms (made putting my make-up on a little challenging)
A bit of a walk to the Metro station

The Bill

Mama Double rooms start at €89

Would We Go Again?

Yes, although I would go for a deluxe or terrace room next time as the luxe was a little too tight for a large-luggage wielding gal like me!
